At GATX Rail Europe, we’re proud to announce the successful handover of intermodal railcars to Dettmer Rail. Dettmer Rail GmbH, based in Hamburg, Germany, specializes in providing innovative logistics solutions for block train and single wagon transportation in European freight rail with a focus on high-quality, reliable services for sectors such as oil, biofuels, chemicals and waste transportation. This collaboration, which includes Dettmer’s sister companies Durmin Entsorgung und Logistik GmbH, MDU Nürnberg, and EVB, represents a forward-thinking shift from road to rail transportation.
Following the success of an initial test run, Dettmer Rail has officially moved forward with two scheduled train journeys per week using GATX’s intermodal railcars. This new service will transport around 108,000 tons of material that was previously moved exclusively by truck. The shift to rail is expected to save approximately 1,500 tons of CO2 annually, reducing road congestion by eliminating the need for 30 truck trips per day*.
A Successful Partnership Between GATX and Dettmer Rail
Shifting from road to rail requires collective effort to make existing transports run smoothly. The successful implementation of this intermodal service at Dettmer Rail GmbH is the result of close collaboration between Dettmer, its sister companies, and GATX, all of whom worked together for a smooth and effective transition.
Mario Reinke, Sales Manager at GATX Rail Europe, expressed his excitement about the new partnership, stating, “We’re thrilled to extend our partnership with Dettmer and are proud to support this important project. The successful handover of the intermodal railcars and the powerful collaboration of all stakeholders marks the beginning of a new, sustainable transportation solution. We look forward to strengthening this long and productive partnership, shifting more transports from road to rail.”
From Dettmer Rail’s side, the response has been equally positive. They are eager to expand their sustainable logistics offerings and reduce their carbon footprint through this new service. Gert Sieksmeyer, Managing Director at Dettmer Rail, said, “We are excited to take this important step towards a greener future. Working with GATX as our railcar partners, we are confident this new intermodal service will not only reduce our carbon footprint, but also enhance the efficiency of our operations. We are pleased with the collaboration.”
Shifting Transportation from Road to Rail
This partnership is a prime example of how collaboration between companies in the logistics and transportation industries can lead to real-world solutions for reducing environmental impact while enhancing efficiency. The shift to rail transportation is part of a broader trend toward greener logistics, which is becoming more essential as industries and businesses worldwide focus on sustainability.
At GATX, we’re excited to see this project take off—and we’re committed to supporting Dettmer Rail and other partners as they continue to grow their sustainable transportation networks.
