The little helpers, supplied with energy by high-performance batteries or solar cells, today already belong to the standard equipment when we are dealing with position and mileage monitoring or shock detection. What’s more, in the meantime even more sensors can be implemented for the monitoring of pressure / temperature, door / dome covers, load conditions or lever operation (handbrake, valves) – depending on the customer’s wishes or the areas of use.

GATX says YES to telematics!

As one of the leading railcar leasing companies in Europe, we at GATX make a clear commitment to telematics – in the medium term we will equip our fleet with selected telematics systems. Our customers can view and evaluate all the data collected via the GATX Customer Portal. We promise: in the future your logistics and transport operations will be more transparent, will run more smoothly and efficiency will be further improved thanks to these systems.

In equipping our freight railcars, we are initially concentrating on four areas:

• Tracking and Tracing
  You have arrival times and potential delays firmly in view. In addition, you can improve standstill and turnaround times.
• Geofencing
  With the individually specified geographical zones, you receive automated status reports e.g. about arrivals at and departures from terminals or workshops.
• Alarm Functions
  You receive individual alarm messages and are informed in real time of transport events such as shock impacts, damage or standstills.
• Mileage Monitoring
  You reduce unplanned downtimes because accurate, up-to-the-minute information about the mileage and with it information about the operating condition of certain components make workshop visits more predictable.

Over the next few years we at GATX will integrate even more telematics and sensor technology applications in to our fleet – according to car type and customer wishes.
