At GATX Rail Europe, we take pride in our Ostróda workshop, which has been a cornerstone of our maintenance and repair operations. Recently, with the addition of a new welding robot and the celebration of its rich history at last year’s 150th anniversary event, our workshop in Ostróda continues to thrive. Now, we’re excited to announce a new development: We’ve been upskilling our team of 250 workers to not only carry out 2,000 railcar revisions and 10,000 planned wheelset repairs per year, but also to construct oil and petrochemical cars, Zans, or GATX type 1698, right at the workshop, with a capacity to build 400 new cars per year.

Skilled Workforce and Oil & Petrochemical Railcar Fleet Rejuvenation
The prototype Zans is complete and series production is underway, with deliveries set for fall. Our dedicated local team has worked tirelessly to make this milestone possible and is thrilled about this advancement. “As we invest in upskilling our workforce, we’re reinforcing our position as experts in the railcar industry,” states Johann Feindert, CEO at GATX Rail Europe. Sławomir Garwacki, Managing Director of the Ostróda Workshop, emphasizes, “By launching tank railcar manufacturing in Ostróda, we’re rejuvenating our fleet. All new lime-green Zans are state-of-the-art and DAC-ready railcars.” He extends a warm invitation to new and potential customers to visit during the production of these innovative tank railcars.

Zans Technical Details
Our Zans are optimized for efficiency, with a capacity of 98.0 m3 and optimized tare weight. The self-supporting tank allows for the optimal transportation of light mineral oil and chemical products with low density. The tare weight is 21.8 t and our Zans have a total length over buffers of 16,400 mm. It is a perfect choice if you are looking to transport a broad range of products of low density optimally across Europe. With the nozzle range on top, the car can be adapted to your loading and unloading requirements.
